| Whether you are looking for world class white water action in the fall, or a somewhat gentler summer ride, the Gauley River has something for everyone. Every fall, for approximately six weeks, the Summersville Dam is dropped to winter pool on a specific schedule set by the Army Corps of Engineers. This creates the awesome whitewater that the fall Gauley rafting season is famous for around the world! Fall Gauley is ranked in the World's Top Ten! No other river can match the thundering rapids, towering waves, house-sized boulders, and virtually continuous whitewater action. This is the rafting highlight of the year with paddlers from all over the world making their way to West Virginia for this annual event. The Summer Gauley is a hidden gem, with loads of rapids, a variety of technical drops, and sparkling cool, clear water. You will paddle the same rapids as folks going in the fall, however, the water levels determine what kind of boat and ride you will be in. At high and medium levels, we go in 14' rafts, while at low flows, 3 to 5 person rafts and inflatable Funyaks are the mode of travel. Don't worry though, you will have excellent whitewater instruction provided by our professional guide staff. Summer Gauley is perfect for open minded, flexible folks seeking a spectacular whitewater rafting experience. |
